Memories Of Our Uncle Stan

Created by DAVID 4 years ago
My late father Bob Williams was eleven years old when he first met Stan and became lifelong best friends. I have two memories of Uncle Stan's sense of humour that my Dad told me about 1.Every week Stan would look in the local paper to see if he was in there and when he found that he wasn't he would get on with his day 2. Stan was researching his family history and told everyone that he was looking for his Grandad or Great Grandad. When he was asked by one of the staff at Haldon Chalet Cafe if he had found him he replied No he must be dead. I also remember Dad always being amazed at how fit Stan was because when they were walking at the Oblisek he would vault a gate. My earliest memory of meeting Uncle Stan was when Dad took me and my sister to Stan's house in Newlands to meet his dog and her new puppies which I think helped develop our love of dogs. I also have a memory of sitting in Haldon Cafe with Stan and Jack Hunt [Dad was in hospital and i was off sick with a bad knee so i was there instead] Two of the staff were talking about needing a plumber one of them said you can't get a good plumber nowadays Jack nudged Stan and said I wouldn't stand for that but I daresay its true You retired. It was an honour and pleasure to do Stan's shopping during Lockdown and always enjoyed our chats at his doorstep when I delivered the shopping. It became the highlight of my week but now doing the shopping at Dawlish Sainsburys will never be the same again.Though I always called Stan Uncle I never knew my dads dad so he was more like a replacement of Dads Dad. I was convinced Stan being so fit and healthy was going to be the Second World War equivalent of Harry Patch The Last Tommy. I have just remembered a Rememberance Sunday afternoon we spent together after the service at The War Memorial we had a fry up in a cafe and a drink in the Legion and then I walked Stan back to the bus stop I remember being amazed how we could never get anywhere because everyone seem to know Stan and wanted to chat to him. Those we love don't go away, They walk beside us everyday ,Unseen Unheard but always near, Still loved, Still missed and very dear. love David Williams
